STCP RENOVATES FLEET WITH 5 100% ELECTRIC VEHICLES

2021.11.27

New buses with a range of 250 km and zero polluting emissions

Starting this Saturday, STCP – Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto will have another five 100% electric buses, concluding the fleet renewal action, which has been ongoing since April 2018 and is supposed to ensure increasing decarbonization of the operation.

The new vehicles guarantee a minimum autonomy of 250 km and a maximum capacity of 90 passengers per vehicle, being fully accessible to customers with reduced mobility. They are equipped with several "state-of-the-art" technologies to support driving/safety and use state-of-the-art materials to reduce environmental impact.

The entry into activity of these 5 100% electric vehicles, with zero pollutant emissions, will allow, as a whole, an annual reduction of about 441 tons of CO2 equivalent, compared to a scenario in which 5 of the old vehicles that were, in the meantime, continued to circulate. , slaughtered.

Manuel Queiró, president of STCP, says "this is yet another achievement that will benefit passengers and the surrounding populations, by guaranteeing the provision of a more technologically advanced, safe and comfortable service, which, at the same time, reduces its environmental footprint”.

The new vehicles powered by 100% electric energy, from the manufacturer Zhongtong Bus (ZT Bus), were obtained under the II notice of the PO SEUR (Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources that allowed the replacement of end-of-life vehicles ( aged over 16), with the aim of providing the population with a more efficient service, in economic and environmental terms, and significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Over the last four years, and with a global investment of around €70M, Sociedade de Transportes Coletivos do Porto now owns a set of 274 cleaner, more energy-efficient and economically efficient vehicles (254 powered by Natural Gas and 20 buses 100% electric). In this context, 65% of STCP's fleet was replaced during this time period.

This STCP fleet renewal project was co-financed by Notice I and Notice II of PO SEUR Portugal 2020 - Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources. Thanks to this Program, the energy mix of the fleet of the largest public transport operator for passengers in AMP – Porto Metropolitan Area, which has 420 buses, is now made up of 79% CNG, 5% electricity and 16% diesel.

The event to present the new 100% electric STCP buses took place this Saturday at the Electric Car Museum and was attended by the Minister of Environment and Climate Action, João Pedro Matos Fernandes and the Secretary of State for Mobility, Eduardo Pinheiro.
Representatives of the operator's six shareholder municipalities were also present (the presidents of Porto, Matosinhos, Gondomar, and Maia, Rui Moreira, Luisa Salgueiro, Marco Martins, António Silva Tiago, respectively, the vice presidents of Valongo and VN Gaia, Ana Maria Rodrigues and Patrocínio Azevedo), in addition to representatives of AMT – Porto Metropolitan Area, IMT – Institute of Mobility of Transport, IP, and the members of the Board of Directors of STCP, the president Manuel Queiró and the directors Isabel Botelho Moniz and Rui Saraiva.

The five Zhongtong Bus buses were supplied by the Portuguese company to EF – Mobilidade Elétrica, which represents this brand in several markets in the European Union. ZT Bus is among the world's five largest bus manufacturers, the second largest in terms of the production of electric buses and the first in terms of hydrogen-powered buses, being an ISO 14001 certified company committed to reducing the environmental footprint of buses. your products.
