STCP launches international public tender for the acquisition of 50 articulated buses

As part of the fleet renewal plan and the ongoing decarbonization policy, and with the aim of eliminating combustion engine buses and replacing Natural Gas buses whose tanks are approaching the end of their useful life, STCP (Porto Public Transport Company) launched, this Wednesday, July 30, an international public tender for the acquisition of 50 articulated buses, with the possibility of acquiring an additional 10 vehicles as an option.

The investment of 25.8 million euros (25,800,000.00) will allow the largest bus operator in the Porto Metropolitan Area to replace the current 49 articulated buses (20 diesel and 29 Compressed Natural Gas), continuing the renewal of the fleet and ensuring a more efficient public service provision from an environmental and economic point of view.

STCP's current fleet consists of 444 buses, of which 75% (332 vehicles) run on compressed natural gas (30% of which are already fueled with biomethane), 15% (68 vehicles) are electric, and 10% (44 vehicles) are diesel. The company's vision is clear: to completely eliminate diesel vehicles by 2027 and, by 2028, achieve a fleet comprised of 60% natural gas and 40% electric vehicles.

The arrival of the new 50 articulated natural gas buses is scheduled for the end of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027. After the delivery of the last vehicle, STCP will have a period of one year to decide on the additional acquisition of the 10 optional buses, under the same contractual conditions.

The announcements of the procedures were published in the Official Journal of the European Union, in the Official Gazette, followed by publication on the Vortal Platform.
