Project description
Fleet Decarbonization - STCP Zero Emission Buses
Objective
Acquire 48 new 12-meter standard electric vehicles, which are more energy-efficient and economical, and emit no pollutants, allowing the fleet to be strengthened and end-of-life vehicles to be retired.
Description of the operation
Objectives and justification of the operation
The overall objective of the operation is to continue the renewal of STCP's fleet, which will enable it to provide a more efficient public service, both environmentally and economically, supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.
This operation will also enable STCP to contribute to Portugal's achievement of its energy efficiency targets. The targets set in the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Roadmap for the transportation sector, one of the main emitters, are highly ambitious, requiring a 98% reduction in emissions by 2050 compared to 2005, and the incorporation of between 94% and 96% of renewable energy into its consumption.
This operation contributes significantly to reducing emissions and increasing the percentage of energy from renewable sources used in transport.
The operation has the following specific objectives:
- Acquire new 12-meter standard vehicles (a total of 48), of the European category M3, class I, powered by electricity, more energy-efficient, economically and without pollutant emissions, allowing to strengthen the fleet and remove from circulation end-of-life vehicles, which do not meet the most appropriate conditions to provide the public service to which STCP is obliged;
- Install suitable charging stations for electric vehicles;
- Publicize the operation, raising awareness among users and the general public about the benefits of using public transport in urban areas, particularly cleaner vehicles (i.e. with lower pollutant emissions and lower energy consumption).
With the planned renewal, important environmental benefits are expected, associated with both an increase in fleet efficiency and lower pollutant emissions.
Result of the international public competition
48 new vehicles will begin to be delivered in September 2023
Following the international public tender, launched on September 26, for the acquisition of 48 100% electric passenger transport vehicles and an electric charging station, consisting of 24 double chargers, and according to the information published last Wednesday on the Vortal Platform, STCP informs that the award was made to the proposal presented by the competitor EF – Energia Fundamental, Mobilidade Elétrica, Lda., representative in Portugal of the Chinese company Zhongtong Bus (ZT Bus).
The overall value of the contract awarded is €19,260,000.00 and concerns 48 100% electric vehicles of the Zhongtong Bus brand and the installation of the charging station at the Via Norte Collection Station.
The installation of the new charging station at the Via Norte Collection Station and the delivery of the new vehicles (standard 12-meter type with a range of approximately 370 km) will take place in phases between October and December 2023.
With the acquisition of these new electric buses, STCP will see its 100% emission-free fleet increase from the current 20 vehicles to 68, which translates into a reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 4,000 tons/year, allowing the replacement of 24 standard end-of-life vehicles and the reinforcement of the company's fleet with an additional 24 clean-energy vehicles.
