STCP began operating 20 new 100% electric buses this Thursday, taking another decisive step in its energy transition and zero-emission mobility strategy. The entry into service of these vehicles was marked by a symbolic ceremony at the Via Norte depot, where they will be based. The event was attended by Porto City Councillor Hugo Beirão Rodrigues, who had the opportunity to travel on the first of the 20 new electric buses, symbolically marking the start of this new phase for the fleet.

This investment, totaling €8.6 million, is the first to be fully supported by the six municipalities that are shareholders of STCP — Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Maia, Matosinhos, Valongo, and Gondomar — since the company's intermunicipalization process, completed in 2021. The acquisition reflects the municipalities' joint commitment to building an increasingly sustainable and modern public transport system aligned with environmental challenges.

With the integration of these 20 new standard-sized vehicles, STCP now has 88 emission-free buses, representing approximately 20% of its operational fleet. The remainder of the fleet is currently composed of vehicles powered by natural gas (70%) and diesel (10%). By the end of 2026, the arrival of 38 more electric buses (30 standard and eight midi) is planned, allowing the company to reach a total of 126 electric buses, which will represent about 30% of the total fleet.

The 20 new vehicles will be located at the Via Norte Depot and will replace twenty buses at the end of their useful life, which will be scrapped, contributing to the renewal and modernization of the fleet.

Technology and innovation

Manufactured by Caetano Bus, the new buses incorporate state-of-the-art technology, notably the 360º panoramic vision system (“hawk eye”), greater energy efficiency, a range of over 400 kilometers, a significant reduction in noise levels, and improvements in comfort and safety for passengers and drivers.

For the President of the Board of Directors of STCP, Cristina Pimentel, this reinforcement of the electric fleet represents a significant milestone in the transformation process of company:

“The acquisition of these 20 new 100% electric buses represents another firm step in STCP's transformation journey. We are consolidating a more modern, efficient and environmentally responsible fleet, while reinforcing the quality of service provided to our passengers. This investment reflects the commitment made to our shareholders and the region: to accelerate the decarbonization of operations, reduce environmental impact and prepare the company for the challenges of urban mobility in the future.”

Present at the ceremony was the Porto City Councillor, Hugo Beirão Rodrigues, responsible for the Economy and Entrepreneurship, Mobility and Transport, and Tourism and Internationalization, highlighted the strategic importance of this investment for the city and the metropolitan area:

"The Municipal Executive is focused on the challenge of continuously improving the reliability of service and punctuality in public transport, and the arrival of 20 more electric buses to STCP represents a significant step in improving the comfort and experience of users.

This addition reinforces a clear vision for the city of Porto: sustainable mobility that serves the economy, improves the quality of life and makes the territory more attractive for those who live, work or visit here.

Investing in a clean fleet is investing in a more competitive, more inclusive city, better prepared to respond to environmental demands and the dynamics of tourism and metropolitan mobility."

This fleet renewal is one of the pillars of STCP's decarbonization strategy, which aims for the progressive elimination of diesel vehicles by 2028, reinforcing the company's commitment to environmental sustainability, the well-being of populations, and the construction of healthier and more resilient cities.
